Researchers-In-Residence Scheme

This scheme enabled a doctoral student or early career academic researcher to do a short-term work placement with a company from within London’s Creative Economy. Below are examples of placements that Creativeworks London has funded. More information about the scheme can be found here.

Punchdrunk and Emma Miles from Royal Holloway, University of London

ROUND 4

For Emma Miles residency with Punchdrunk she joined The Lost Lending Library as it visited schools in Newham, East London. Shadowing the company Miles had two research questions: firstly, how does The Lost Lending Library support curriculum aims in the Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two classes. Secondly, to ask, what alternative pedagogical role might Punchdrunk Enrichment’s work play in school community.

London Symphony Orchestra and Sam Duffy from Queen Mary University of London

ROUND 4

The residency began with the organisation of a series of semi-structured interviews with key individuals in LSO’s Discovery team. Conducted over four months Duffy met with project managers, representatives of the marketing department, LSO’s St Luke’s Centre Manager, trusts and foundations managers, the Director of Finance and Resources and the Managing Director of LSO.

Institute of Contemporary Arts and Will Dutta from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance

ROUND 4

Resurrecting the ICA MusICA series, which ran between 1978-94, Dutta organised MusICA Now: Exploring Sound and Authorship which ran in July 2015. The curated evening opened with a screening of David Ryan’s film Via di San Teodoro 8 (2011) in one of the ICA’s cinema spaces, followed by a live event in the ICA bar.

Freud Museum London and Benjamin Poore from Queen Mary University of London

ROUND 4

Dr Poore’s work looked to widen the potential methods of research dissemination and challenged him to work outside traditional academic routes producing shorter, more direct and journalistic pieces of writing. The residency presented him the opportunity to collaborate with journalists, designs and curators, professionals usually outside of his network.

DACS and Tania Phipps-Rufus from Goldsmiths, University of London

ROUND 4

Phipps-Rufus’s research has led to the development of an events programme for 2016 focusing on art, fashion and intellectual property issues. Three events will be hosted and the programme we be implemented as part of DACS new business methodology.

Clean Break and Emily Hunka from Queen Mary University of London

ROUND 4

For her residency PhD student Emily Hunka researched the methods employed by Clean Break in order to evaluate their outcomes and work to illustrate the value of Clean Break to commissioners, health funders and clinicians.

Ben Uri Gallery and Musuem and Lily Ford from Birkbeck University of London

ROUND 4

This researcher in residence project placed Lily Ford from Birkbeck University of London with the gallery to help establish a cohesive narrative of their first fifteen years. Working with archival material, many recently translated from Yiddish, and cross referencing with documents housed at the Whitechapel Gallery and the Jewish Museum, Ford has produced considerable original research.
