An effective social media strategy is essential for any modern company or not-for-profit organisation – but there is more to it than just having a Facebook page and a Twitter account. Social Media is a way of changing what you do and how you do it.

This workshop is designed to give new insights in to Social Media for Social Change, allowing SMEs to experiment with practical marketing and promotional strategy tools. Specific case studies from the charity, government and health sectors will be discussed, including the innovation labs created by organisations like Greenpeace, Oxfam and UNICEF, initiatives discussed in the NHS social media community and the social hack-based innovations in national and local government.

By close study of examples and emerging ideas, and through experimenting with practical tools, participants will come to think differently about making an impact in the age of networks and come away from this workshop with knowledge of techniques to change their day to day work.

This is a practice-based workshop combining presentations and group work.

Presented by Dan Mcquillan, Lecturer in Creative & Social Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London

Dan McQuillan is an experienced social media consultant, teacher and practitioner. Dan has worked in online outreach for charities and NGOs, and headed Amnesty International’s first delegation to the UN Internet governance Forum. He has also been Head of Digital for the Make Your Mark campaign, using social media to support
entrepreneurship, and also for Media for Development, using participatory digital innovation to empower marginalized communities. He routinely leads Social Innovation Camps, where people come together to build web-based solutions to social problems in just 48 hours.
