We invite you to join us for a seminar which will report on some preliminary findings from research carried out during the last 12 months of the Performance Making Diploma for adults with learning disabilities which is based at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. The research adopted an emancipatory model (Oliver 1992) and asks how the constant discrimination experienced by disabled people impacts on performing making and training and how this new performance making course enables the development of a more inclusive pedagogy. By positioning the students on the course as co-researchers, we together investigate how the course has developed its pedagogical processes during this first year, how the performative and aesthetic outcomes have challenged common assumptions around acting and learning disabilities and how this data leads us to suggest that the label of ‘learning disability’ is one that is socially produced.
The Performance Making Diploma for adults and learning disabilities was launched in January 2014 by Access All Areas in partnership with Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Funded by the Leverhulme Trust, this one year course has completed its first year with 15 graduates. The Diploma was created in response to the exclusion of learning disabled adults from current professional higher education performance-related training courses and indeed overall from the theatre industry itself. The course draws on learning disability culture, politics and disability aesthetics and re-affirms the performer as co-creator in authoring devised performance. Professional theatre companies and practitioners who have taught on the course include: Frantic Assembly, Punchdrunk, Mat Fraser, LADA and Jenny Sealey.
The seminar will include insights and contributions from a number of the students as co-researchers, as well as Nick Llewellyn (Access All Areas), director of the Diploma course, Liselle Terret (Coventry University) co-leader and co-researcher on the course, and Sarah Whatley (Coventry University), who will provide a context for this type of work, relating it to her own current research on disability, dance and law.
