Celebrating women composers: a taster

Kate Ryder (CWL Creative Entrepreneur in Residence awardee) teaches this lively introduction to the music of three key Women composers – Hildegard of Bingen (1098 – 1179) Clara Schumann (1819 -1896) and Judith Weir (b.1954 -) the first woman to be appointed “Master of the Queen’s Music” in 400 years! This course considers the relationship between gender, society and creativity, and looks at the factors affecting women composers across the centuries.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • Have an in depth biographical knowledge of these three major composers and their works
  • Understand their personal and creative development through the prism of gender and society
  • Understand how this directly influenced their compositions
  • Recognise key works from their output
