CWL FUNDED PROJECT: STORIES & UPDATES: Royal Society of Portrait Painters Present at the University of Vienna Conference

As an unexpected spin off of the Researchers in Residence scheme, on Friday 26 September Annabel Elton, Head of Commissions at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (RP) and Sara Ayres of Kingston University London presented the findings from their Creativeworks London research residency to an an international conference at the University of Vienna, “Scholars’ Monuments: Historical Meaning and Cultural Significance”.

Attended by academics from across Europe and the United States, the conference ran for three days, in three languages. Annabel and Sara’s paper focused on the contemporary culture of commissioning scholars’ monuments in Britain’s old and new Universities and drew extensively on the qualitative research undertaken during Sara’s stint as a Researcher in Residence at the RP. The paper prompted lively discussion and a great deal of interest in the Creativeworks London project.
