The Culture Capital Exchange are delighted to introduce the 5th Inside Out Festival, taking place at venues across London from Monday 20th October – Sunday 26th October, highlighting the massive contribution that TCCE members make to London’s cultural and creative life. This year’s festival includes over 50 events including highly topical debates on themes including: Women, Fashion and Power (at London College of Fashion), The Psychology of Atrocity (at the Palgrave Macmillan Campus) and Sustainable Futures (at Somerset House). Festival workshops include Exploring Electronic Waste (at the V&A) Getting your book Published (at City University) and Interpreting London’s Landmarks (at The Griffin Gallery).

Key events taking place during Inside Out Festival week are:

Opening Debate: Artists in the Academy (20th October 2014)

Presented in partnership with The British Academy

At a time when universities are exploring new ways to maximise the impact of their research and connect themselves to the wider world in increasingly dynamic and unexpected ways, it appears that universities are also signalling a desire to bring the work of arts practitioners into the academy.

What does this shift tell us and why is it taking place? Is this work happening throughout the academic sector or only in particular contexts? What values and benefits do artists and cultural practitioners bring to the academy?

Creativity and Urban Development: Can cities have it all: Culture, competitiveness, social inclusion and sustainable development? (21st October 2014)

The potential of the creative paradigm has excited policy makers, policy advisor’s, advertising agencies and academic researchers alike.  For a time, the use of the word “creative” was seen as a panacea to address stagnation, recession and underinvestment.

The UK is awash with “creative” cities, towns, sectors, quarters and organisations which looked to jump onto the “creativity bandwagon” to raise their profiles, competitiveness and status.  However, just attaching the word “creative” to a city or initiative, promoting and building cultural flagship projects, such as The Public in West Bromwich or hosting cultural events like the millennium celebrations at The Dome did not meet the expectation of city planners and city managers. Similarly the promotion of cultural and creative industries did not really contribute to structural change of ailing local economies, except within some very specific areas. In the end using the creativity paradigm has been much window dressing.
