Creativeworks London Job Opportunity: Post-doctoral Research Assistant (Digital Economy)

Creativeworks London, founded in 2012 running till 31st May 2016, is a £4.8 million AHRC-funded Knowledge Exchange (KE) Hub which aims to help Arts and Humanities researchers make a significant contribution to London’s Creative Economy. It is a partnership of London higher education institutions (HEIs), cultural organisations, and creative industry companies. Hub activity is focused through three Research Clusters: Research Cluster 1 – London: Place-Work-Knowledge; Research Cluster 2 – London’s Digital Economy; Research Cluster 3 – Capturing London’s Audiences.

Since its inception, Creativeworks London has supported over 140 short-term research projects involving a small and medium enterprise (SME) and one or more research partners, spanning the entire range of London’s creative and cultural activities, from fashion through heritage to the visual and performing arts. Hub researchers have been involved in both stimulating and evaluating many of these projects, alongside developing their own independent lines of research within the overall concerns of each cluster.

Creativeworks London is recruiting a new Post-doctoral Research Assistant for Research Cluster 2 – London’s Digital Economy. The Research Assistant will be primarily associated with Research Cluster 2, but will also be expected to work as part of a flexible and multidisciplinary team with the other clusters and Research Assistants as required. The postholder will also work closely with the KE Programme team to help deliver the objectives of the Hub.

The Hub is evolving significantly as core concerns clarify and develop, and precise duties of this post will be determined collectively in light of the qualifications and interests of the successful candidate.

Nevertheless, the Research Assistant will undertake studies, contribute to reports, organize events, participate in knowledge exchange discussions, and carry out or facilitate collaborative research between Hub partners.

Research Assistant 2 (responsible to Research Cluster 2 lead Prof. Geraint Wiggins, School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, QMUL): will be concerned with exploring characteristics of London’s Digital Economy, including the relationship between HEIs, large cultural organisations such as the BBC, the British Library, the National Archives and the V&A and emerging digital technologies. The aim is to develop new understandings, spaces and models for knowledge exchange from arts and humanities research to the digital creative industries of the creative economy, and to continue the development of understandings, spaces and models that have emerged, where appropriate, for example: those emerging from over 100 collaborations funded by Creativeworks London; methods for establishing creative cultures; digital commons to support knowledge exchange; digital curation; or material culture of the Internet-of-Things.

The post is full time (35 hours a week), starting on 1st October 2015 (or as soon thereafter as possible) until 31st May 2016. Salary will be in the range of £37,275 – £41,533 per annum. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Jana Riedel at: j.riedel@qmul.ac.uk

The closing date for applications is 9 September 2015. Interviews will be held on 18 September 2015.
